En 1609 varias personas son acusadas de brujería en la aldea navarra de Zugarramurdi. Lo que parecía un episodio puntual, sin importancia, va adquiriendo una virulencia inusitada. En estas circunstancias el inquisidor general Bernardo de Sandoval envía a Alonso de Salazar y Frías a Logroño, sede del Santo Oficio.
No se trata tan solo de hechicerías, mal de ojo, vuelos nocturnos o tratos carnales con Lucifer: los hay que confiesan atroces asesinatos y la utilización sistemática de niños como acólitos del Gran Cabrón. Pero ¿por qué esta epidemia ahora con epicentro en una aldea cerca de la frontera francesa? ¿Es la brujería un espejo que refleja conflictos e intereses variados, muchos de los cuales no tienen nada que ver con el diablo?
