Emily, a strait-laced singing teacher, is visited by Ray, a young man who wants to improve his vocal technique before singing at a memorial service for his recently dead mother. The song he has chosen – The Swallow – holds special meaning for him and, apparently, for Emily too. Despite her initial reluctance, she agrees to give him a first lesson. As the evening progresses, both characters reveal details of their past and the profound impact on their lives of the events of the previous year, when their town suffered an Islamic terrorist attack. The real meaning of the attack, the terrorist’s motives, and the long shadow cast by his victims give rise to a heated argument between Emily and Ray, leading them to discover the truth about those terrible events, and forcing them to reflect on their own identities, the acceptance of loss, and the fragility of love. By the end, all of their illusions have been stripped away – but they are united forever in a song to life.
