Toda la obra de Juan Rulfo (1918-1986) apareció entre 1953 (fecha de publicación de «El Llano en llamas») y 1955 (año de la primera edición de «Pedro Páramo»), entregándose en adelante el genial narrador prácticamente al silencio durante tres décadas, salvo por «El gallo de oro» (1980), relato pensado y escrito para el cine. A instancias de un editor mexicano, Rulfo seleccionaría en 1977 esta antología personal, que recoge lo esencial de su labor creadora. El volumen recopila ocho cuentos de «El Llano en llamas», dos fragmentos de «Pedro Páramo» y dos textos («La vida no es muy seria en sus cosas» y «Pedazo de noche») publicados en revistas y no recogidos en libros.
