En 1989 David Foster Wallace se traslada a Boston para cursar un posgrado en Harvard y se instala en el apartamento de Mark Costello, antiguo compañero de universidad. Juntos descubren su común interés por la naciente música rap. DFW se aventura en un ensayo con el que desmenuzar el ADN cultural del género. Costello escribe pequeñas réplicas que devienen ensayos completos, entrelazados con los de Wallace. El resultado será “Ilustres raperos”, una suerte de tratado que intenta encontrar el sentido del rap a partir de la sociología, la economía, la filosofía, la ley y otras tantas disciplinas.
