Devançant les avant‐gardes du XXème siècle et ouvrant la grande tradition surréaliste de l’art belge, James Ensor (1860‐1949) a crée, lentement, inconsciemment, mais avec une sure logique, un royaume de masques dont il sera roi. Ce fut pour lui la découverte d’un pays, province par province, avec ses lieux pittoresques succédant aux endroits terribles et ses parages tristes prolongeant ou séparant les districts fous.
Émile Verhaeren (1855‐1916) fut un grand ami de James Ensor et le premier défenseur de son art, ainsi que, avec ce texte de 1908, son premier biographe.
